Frequently asked questions

WINTER AND MILD WINTER CAR SEAT COVERS

DRESSING YOUR BABY
  • 1 - HOW SHOULD I DRESS MY BABY WHEN HE/SHE IS IN THE CAR SEAT COVER?
A hat is strongly advised, because 10% of body heat is lost through the head.
Be careful that your baby is not too hot this can be just as harmful as the cold.
    In the car: :
Do not dress in a snowsuit.
Dress with a hat, warm pajamas made of polar fleece or other material and a light blanket if you wish.

    On a walk: :
It all depends on the duration of the activity and the outside temperature. Also take into account the wind factor, i.e. the temperature felt. You might want to add a hat, warm pajamas made of polar fleece or other material, slippers, mittens, a light blanket and an insulated backing.
The insulated backing will provide a better protection against the cold.
  • 2 - HOW CAN I KNOW IF MY BABY IS WARM IN THE COVER?
Take note that each child has a different metabolism. Some are more chilly than others. The easiest way is to check the temperature behind your child's neck. If it is wet, your baby is too hot. You must then see to decrease the temperature inside the cover. Either by removing a blanket, hat, mittens, booties, lighter clothing or simply opening the cover slightly. Please wait a few minutes and check again.
COVER INSTALLATION
COVER USAGE
  • 5 - SHOULD I COVER THE HOLE OF THE COVER WITH A BLANKET?
NO - The opening is important because it allows air circulation. If it snows during your outing, the hole is not big enough to accumulate much snow. The cover is like an igloo. It is scientifically proven that heat rises. It then comes out through the opening of the cover and the few snowflakes that fall in front of the opening will melt before they reach the baby. It is IMPORTANT to NEVER put a cover over the opening to keep the snow or rain out.
  • 6- DOES MY BABY'S HEAD HAVE TO COME OUT OF THE HOLE OF THE PETIT COULOU?
NO - Our Petit Coulou covers have been designed to provide an optimal comfort and safety for your baby. Thanks to our patented process of semi-rigid rods, it allows an optimal structural support and avoids sagging. Therefore, your baby is comfortably installed in the cover, free of movement and creating its own heat thanks to the igloo effect. Under no circumstances should the cover be lowered towards your child to prevent the product from malfunctioning. The opening allows air to circulate and gives you the possibility to see your child at all times.
  • 7 - SHOULD I OPEN THE PETIT COULOU COVER WHEN I AM DRIVING OR IN THE CAR?
We suggest to always follow the recommendations included in the instruction manual of your car seat manufacturer.

It is important to always leave the cover open to prevent your child from getting too hot inside the car seat. Partially or completely lower the zipper to reduce the temperature inside the Petit Coulou or remove the cover.
  • 8- CAN I USE THE COVER ON A BABY CARRIAGE OR PRAM?
It is not recommended to put the cover on the baby carriage of the stroller. If you really want to use the product, you should know that it will have the same effect as a blanket. It will protect against the wind and keep some of the heat in, provided that you dress your baby warmly according to the outside temperature.
USAGE DURATION
  • 9 - UNTIL WHAT AGE MY BABY CAN BE IN HIS/HER PETIT COULOU?
You can use your cover as long as your child is in their car seat. It all depends on your baby's weight and height. Generally a baby will stay in his/her shell until the age of 12 months. For more information, refer to your car seat manufacturer's manual.
HOW THE COVER WORKS
CHOOSING THE RIGHT MODEL
  • 14 - WHICH PETIT COULOU SHOULD I BUY FOR A BIRTH IN THE MONTH OF...?
This table indicates which cover to use according to the season. As a guideline to help you choose the right cover, shell-type car seats are generally used for more or less than 12 months. This chart is for reference only. Since the seasons are not the same from one year to another, the period of use for each cover can be advanced or extended.

Summer cover : May to September

Winter cover : November to March

3 seasons cover: September to May

    * Information based on the Quebec region.
  • 15 - WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 3 SEASONS COVER AND THE WINTER COVER?
The 3 seasons cover has a removable lining. It keeps your baby warm in temperatures from -30°C / 14°F to 15°C / 59°F. It can be used as a spring, winter and fall coat.

The winter cover has two layers of insulation and keeps your baby warm down to temperatures of about -30°C / -22°F .

If the winter coat you wear during the colder weather becomes too warm, so will the winter cover. It would be better to opt for a 3 seasons cover, since the lining is removable.
INSULATED BACKING
  • 16- WHEN SHOULD I USE THE INSULATED BACKING?
We recommend the use of the insulated backing during outdoor walks in colder winter temperatures. Take into account your child's metabolism and weather factors. Check your child's body temperature to make sure he/she is not too hot. Refer to the tab: How to know if my baby is warm. Our insulated backing has been tested in the laboratory and offers a CLO (CLO information in FEATURES) that can reach temperatures as low as the winter cover, i.e. - 30° ̊C / -22 °̊F.
  • 17 - CAN I USE THE REMOVABLE INSULATED BACKING WHEN BABY IS IN THE CAR?
Car seat manufacturers advise against using an insulated backing during car rides. The insulated backing is designed to protect your baby on long outdoor walks.
  • 18 - CAN I REPLACE THE INSULATED BACKING WITH A BLANKET?
It is not recommended to replace the insulated backing with a blanket. As there are different models on the market (more or less warm), these have not been tested and we cannot guarantee the energy efficiency. Also, it is more difficult to properly place the blanket at the bottom of the car seat because it does not have the openings to let the straps pass through like our insulated backing. In addition, the blanket risks moving around, creating clumps of fabric in certain areas and creating discomfort.
